Ryder Cup Format for 8 players

Teams, formats, points and tee times for a 8-player Ryder Cup style golf trip.

For 8 players, split into two teams of 4 and play three rounds: Four Ball, Four Ball, then Singles. That's 2 + 2 + 4 = 8 points, and the first team to 4½ wins the cup. You need 2 tee times each day.

The Classic 3-Round Plan

RoundFormatMatchesPoints
1Four Ball (2-man best ball)22
2Four Ball (2-man best ball)22
3Singles (1 v 1)44
Total · first to 4½ wins8

Points are match play: win a match for a point, halve it for half a point. The table shows each round for 4 players a side.

Tee Times

Two foursomes, so two tee times in a row each day. Partner rounds are one match per foursome; on singles day each foursome plays two singles matches side by side.

Picking Teams

With four a side, captains can pick teams in a few minutes. Snake draft by handicap (1, 2, 2, 1) keeps it even.

Eight is the easiest size to run: everyone is in one of two groups, so the board reads like a duel all day.

FAQ

How many points does it take to win a Ryder Cup with 8 players?

It depends on how many rounds you play. Over three rounds (Four Ball, Four Ball, Singles) there are 8 points, so 4½ wins. Over two rounds there are 6, so 3½ wins. A tie is possible, so agree a tiebreak before you tee off (the team that holds the cup keeps it, or a sudden-death playoff).

How many tee times do 8 players need?

2 foursomes, so 2 tee times per round. Every partner match (2 v 2) is one foursome, and on singles day each foursome plays two 1 v 1 matches.

What formats should we play?

Start with Four Ball (2-man best ball), which is forgiving and keeps everyone in it. Mix in Scramble or Alternate Shot on later days, and finish with Singles, which carries the most points and gives you the Sunday finish.

How do handicaps work in a Ryder Cup trip?

Enter each player's handicap and play net. LeaderboardLive works out who gets a stroke on each hole and shows it on the scorecard. For match play you choose whether the low player in each match plays off scratch ("spin off the low man") or everyone plays off their full handicap.

Can we score it by holes won instead of matches won?

Yes. With hole points, every hole in every match is worth a point, so the three-round plan above is worth 144 points instead of 8. It keeps every match alive to the last hole, even after one side is out of reach.
