For 16 players, split into two teams of 8 and play three rounds: Four Ball, Four Ball, then Singles. That's 4 + 4 + 8 = 16 points, and the first team to 8½ wins the cup. You need 4 tee times each day.
The Classic 3-Round Plan
| Round | Format | Matches | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Four Ball (2-man best ball) | 4 | 4 |
| 2 | Four Ball (2-man best ball) | 4 | 4 |
| 3 | Singles (1 v 1) | 8 | 8 |
| Total · first to 8½ wins | 16 | ||
Points are match play: win a match for a point, halve it for half a point. The table shows each round for 8 players a side.
Tee Times
Four foursomes, so four tee times in a row. Each partner round is four matches; singles day is eight.
Picking Teams
Eight a side, the most common trip size. Captains can set pairings each morning, the way the real Ryder Cup does.
Sixteen is the sweet spot: enough matches that the lead changes during a round, small enough that everyone can be at dinner together.

FAQ
How many points does it take to win a Ryder Cup with 16 players?
It depends on how many rounds you play. Over three rounds (Four Ball, Four Ball, Singles) there are 16 points, so 8½ wins. Over two rounds there are 12, so 6½ wins. A tie is possible, so agree a tiebreak before you tee off (the team that holds the cup keeps it, or a sudden-death playoff).
How many tee times do 16 players need?
4 foursomes, so 4 tee times per round. Every partner match (2 v 2) is one foursome, and on singles day each foursome plays two 1 v 1 matches.
What formats should we play?
Start with Four Ball (2-man best ball), which is forgiving and keeps everyone in it. Mix in Scramble or Alternate Shot on later days, and finish with Singles, which carries the most points and gives you the Sunday finish.
How do handicaps work in a Ryder Cup trip?
Enter each player's handicap and play net. LeaderboardLive works out who gets a stroke on each hole and shows it on the scorecard. For match play you choose whether the low player in each match plays off scratch ("spin off the low man") or everyone plays off their full handicap.
Can we score it by holes won instead of matches won?
Yes. With hole points, every hole in every match is worth a point, so the three-round plan above is worth 288 points instead of 16. It keeps every match alive to the last hole, even after one side is out of reach.
