Ryder Cup scoring: points, Race to, and the defending champion

Two sides play matches round by round. Match Points gives a point per match won; Hole Points gives a point per hole. First to half the points plus a half wins the cup.

Round formats

FormatEach sideHow a hole is decided
2-Man Best Ball (Four Ball)2 players, own ballsThe side’s better net ball
Scramble2 players, one ballOne side score
Alternate Shot2 players, one ballOne side score
Singles1 playerNet score head to head

Each round is scored Net (handicaps) or Gross (straight up). Best Ball and Singles start net; Scramble and Alternate Shot start gross. Change it per round in Manage → Rounds.

Match Points or Hole Points

  • Match Points: a point for every match won, half each for a halved match. A match ends when the lead is more than the holes left (3&2, or 1UP won on the last hole). Holes after that can still be scored for stats; they don’t count.
  • Hole Points: a point for every hole won, half for a push, added up across every match. Every hole is played.

Winning the cup

  • Race to = half the points available plus a half. With 16 matches it’s 8½.
  • Once one side can’t be caught, the board says {Team} win the cup. Remaining matches can still be played out.
  • With no defending champion, a level finish is Tied.

Defending champion

Set it in Manage → Format → Defending champion. The holders need exactly half the points and keep the cup on a tie; the challengers need half plus a half. Each side’s score tile shows its own target, for example 8 to Retain and 8½ to Win.

Spin off the low man

Turn it on and the lowest handicap in each match plays to scratch, with everyone else off the difference. In Four Ball it’s worked out across all four players.
