The structure
Two teams, named however your group wants. Each session is a set of matches, commonly four-ball in the morning and alternate shot or singles later. Every match contributes points to the overall team score, whole points for a win, half for a tie, until one team crosses the threshold.
Set the scoring system before anyone argues about it
Most groups use either hole points (each hole worth a point, split on a tie) or match points (each full match worth a point, split on a tie). Decide this before the trip starts, not on the back nine.
The part that usually turns into a spreadsheet
This format has a lot of moving pieces: multiple sessions, multiple matches per session, a running team total nobody wants to add up by hand.
